About this recipe

Chutneys hold a special place in Indian cuisine. Whether you are enjoying dal-rice, freshly prepared roti or delicious parathas, a spoonful of chutney can enhance the entire meal. Moreover, when a chutney combines fresh tomatoes, onions, green chillies and aromatic Indian spices, the flavour becomes even more exciting.

Today, we are sharing an easy and delicious Spicy Tomato Chutney Recipe. This traditional desi-style chutney is prepared using simple ingredients commonly available in Indian kitchens.

The best part of this homemade chutney is its tangy, spicy and savoury flavour. Fresh tomatoes provide natural tanginess, while onions add a mild sweetness. Meanwhile, green chillies bring a pleasant heat. Ginger and garlic further enhance the aroma and taste.

Tomatoes are also a source of important nutrients, including vitamin C and lycopene. To learn more about their nutritional value and potential health benefits, read this informative article on tomato benefits by Metropolis Healthcare.

This recipe uses aromatic whole spices such as cumin seeds, black cardamom, green cardamom and bay leaves. When these spices are lightly roasted in hot oil, they release a wonderful fragrance. Additionally, a small amount of Maggi seasoning adds an extra savoury flavour to the chutney.

Why Make This Spicy Tomato Chutney?

Sometimes, eating the same vegetables, dal and rice every day can become repetitive. However, a delicious homemade chutney can make even a simple meal feel special.

Furthermore, this recipe is incredibly easy to prepare. First, whole spices are sautéed in hot oil. Next, chopped onions, green chillies, ginger and garlic are added. Finally, fresh tomatoes and seasonings are cooked together over low heat.

Unlike many smooth chutney recipes, this version does not require boiling or blending the tomatoes beforehand. Instead, the tomatoes soften naturally during cooking. As a result, the chutney develops a slightly chunky and rustic texture.

You can serve this spicy tomato chutney with warm roti, paratha, khichdi or dal-rice. It also tastes wonderful alongside other traditional Indian dishes.

Additionally, you can easily adjust the spice level according to your preference. For a hotter chutney, add more green chillies. Alternatively, reduce the chilli quantity for a milder version.
