How to Make Bharwa Shimla Mirch Recipe

Bharwa Shimla Mirch Recipe is a flavorful Indian dish made with capsicum and aromatic spices. It is simple to prepare at home and tastes delicious with everyday Indian meals.

The highlight of this recipe is its flavorful stuffing. Whole coriander seeds, fennel seeds, and dried red chillies are gently roasted before being ground. Roasting the spices gives the stuffing a wonderful aroma and deeper flavor.

Onion, ginger, and garlic form the base of the filling. Amchur powder adds a pleasant tangy taste. Garam masala makes the stuffing even more flavorful.

Once the filling is ready, it is stuffed inside cleaned capsicums. The stuffed capsicums are then slowly cooked in a covered pan.

Cooking them over low heat is important. It allows the capsicum to become soft without burning. It also gives the filling enough time to absorb the flavors.

This Bharwa Shimla Mirch Recipe is perfect for lunch or dinner. You can serve it with roti or paratha. It also tastes great with dal and steamed rice.

A bowl of plain curd or raita works well on the side. You can also serve a fresh salad with the meal.

  6. Nigella seeds¼ tablespoons
  7. Turmeric powder1 teaspoon
  8. Salt½ teaspoon or according to taste
  9. Amchur powder1 tablespoons

  11. Whole coriander seeds2 tablespoons
  12. Whole dried red chillies2

Method (Steps)4 steps

1

Roast the Whole Spices

Heat a pan over low heat. Add the whole coriander seeds, dried red chillies, and fennel seeds.

Roast the spices over low heat. Keep stirring continuously to prevent them from burning.

Roast them for about 2 to 3 minutes. Once they become aromatic, turn off the heat.

Allow the spices to cool slightly. Grind them into a coarse or fine spice mixture and keep aside.

2

Prepare the Stuffing

Finely chop the onion, garlic, and ginger. You can use a vegetable chopper to make this step easier.

Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a pan. Add the nigella seeds and allow them to crackle slightly.

Add the turmeric powder and mix briefly. Now add the chopped onion, ginger, and garlic.

Cook everything over low heat for about 3 to 4 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent burning.

Add the previously ground spice mixture. Now add salt, amchur powder, and garam masala.

Mix everything thoroughly. Cook the stuffing for another 2 minutes over low heat.

Turn off the heat once the mixture is nicely roasted. Transfer it to a plate and allow it to cool completely.

3

Stuff the Capsicums

Wash the capsicums thoroughly. Carefully remove the stems without breaking the capsicums.

Remove all the seeds from inside. Make sure the capsicums are clean before adding the stuffing.

Fill each capsicum with the prepared spice mixture. Add the stuffing gradually.

Press the filling gently with your fingers. Do not pack it too tightly.

Overfilling may cause the capsicum to break while cooking. Prepare all the capsicums in the same way.

4

Cook the Stuffed Capsicums

Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a pan. Carefully place all the stuffed capsicums inside.

Cover the pan with a lid. Cook them over low heat for approximately 5 minutes.

Remove the lid and carefully turn each capsicum. Make sure the stuffing does not fall out.

Continue turning the capsicums so they cook evenly on all sides.

Cover the pan again. Cook for another 3 to 4 minutes over low heat.

Check the capsicums for softness. Once they are tender and properly cooked, turn off the heat.

FAQ

Small or medium-sized capsicums work best for this recipe. They are easier to stuff and turn while cooking. Try to choose capsicums of a similar size. This helps them cook evenly and at approximately the same time.

This usually happens when the capsicum is overfilled. The stuffing may also fall out if you turn the capsicum too quickly. Fill each capsicum gently and leave a little space at the top. Turn them carefully while cooking.

Yes, boiled potatoes can be added to the stuffing. Mash the potatoes and combine them with the prepared spice mixture. Potatoes make the stuffing more filling and give the recipe a slightly different texture.

The cooking time depends on the size of the capsicum. Generally, 10 to 15 minutes over low heat should be sufficient. Keep turning the capsicums occasionally. Cook until they become tender but still hold their shape.

Yes, you can make this recipe without onion and garlic. Use boiled potatoes or roasted gram flour as the base of the stuffing. Add coriander, fennel, amchur, and your preferred Indian spices for flavor.

Bharwa Shimla Mirch tastes delicious with roti, chapati, or paratha. You can also serve it with dal and steamed rice. Plain curd, raita, and a fresh salad are excellent accompaniments.
